What it is
N-Acetyl L-Carnitine, often written ALCAR, is a form of the amino acid carnitine. The body makes it, and it is also found in meat. Its main job is moving fats into the part of the cell that burns them for energy.

What the research says
ALCAR has been studied in aging research for several decades, mostly in older adults with mild memory complaints. Some trials report benefits on attention and memory tests; others do not. Evidence in healthy younger adults is thin.
Who should be careful
ALCAR is generally well tolerated. Some people notice a fishy body odour or mild stomach upset. It may interact with thyroid medicine and blood thinners, so mention it to your doctor if you take either.
